COMMISSIONING A NEW WORK

Deciding to purchase one of our Original works of art can be an exciting decision to make!  But there are some things you must consider before you place your order:

It can take time to complete the work of art you have requested.  Orders are completed on a first come - first serve basis.  Scott may work on up to two pieces at a time, but never more than that, and if there are other orders already placed before yours, your order will have to wait until previous orders have been filled.

Creating an original can sometimes take quite a bit of time.  Major works can be quite time consuming - depending on the subject matter, and how detailed the customer would like the piece to be.  For example, a simple piece may be able to be completed in only a few days, whereas a more complicated piece may take several months.  The average time it takes Scott to complete a major work is between one and four months.  The longest it has taken him has been upwards of a year.

How much does Commissioning an Original cost?  The price of a commissioned original is based upon the estimated time we think it will take to complete the work.  When a customer requests an original, we require as much detail as can be provided about what the customer is looking for.  Whenever possible, we request a photograph (or photographs) of the subject matter so we can make the art work as accurate as possible.

Every work of art is different, and there is no set "price range" to go off of when commissioning an original - but the average cost is usually between $4,000 and $20,000.

Scott can take any subject matter you provide and turn it into a unique work of art - but his most common requests are portraits.  Below are some average prices for typical personal portraits:

  • Head and shoulders - no background (approximate size 11" x 14")  -  $500 - $1,000

  • Head and shoulders - no background (approximate size 16" x 20")  -  $1,000 - $2,000

  • Head and bust - no background (approximate size 16" x 20" - 22" x 28")  -  $2,500 - $4,500

    • Add additional fee for background  -  $1,500 - $2,500

  • 1/2 Figure with hands - no background (approximate size 16" x 20" - 22" x 28")  -  $4,000 - $7,500

    • Add additional fee for background  -  $1,500 - $2,500

  • 3/4 Figure to Full Figure - no background (approximate size 16" x 20" - 22" x 28") - $7,000 - $12,000

    • Add additional fee for background  -  $1,500 - $4,000

  • Add additional fee for animals $750 - $1,250

  • Average portrait prices listed above are for 1 person only.  Please contact us directly regarding multiple or groups of people.

The sizes above are only "average prices" and "average sizes" for typical commissioned portraits.  Please contact us regarding pricing for other size options.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide "average pricing" for any commissioned works other than portraits.  Other works of art (i.e. landscapes, historical or religious art, master studies, etc.) vary so widely, that it is not possible to give an "average price".  Please contact us directly regarding these.

Once we have an idea of what it will take to complete an original work, we will provide the customer with an estimated price.  We require a 10% down payment (of the total estimate) prior to work commencing.  Should the customer wish to proceed with the order, we will furnish the customer with a contract detailing the project we will undertake on their behalf.  Work on the project will commence once we have received the down payment along with the signed contract.  After the work is completed, we will send the customer photos of the finished product, and if everything is satisfactory, the remainder of the balance will be due at that time.  Once the final payment has been received, the artwork will be delivered to the customer.

What if I commission a drawing, and then change my mind after it has been completed? Can I get my deposit back?  Unfortunately, if a customer reneges, or "backs out", of their agreement to purchase a work after it has been completed (or is in production), their deposit is "Non-Refundable".  This is to protect us, and minimize our loss for the time taken that we could have been working on another project.

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY

All Originals come with a Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Scott Spencer, and dated on the day the Original was completed.

FRAMING, INSURANCE & SHIPPING

We offer free custom framing on all Original pieces whose initial price is $2,000 or higher (custom framing is also available for pieces under $2,000 - but at an additional cost).  Please inquire what framing options are available when placing your order.  Unframed options are also available (typically desired if the customer already has a frame in which to put the artwork in - or if they wish to do the framing themselves).

All Unframed Originals will be shipped within 1-3 business days after final payment has been received and processed (shipping times may vary depending on the destination).  Framed and Custom-Framed Originals may take longer depending on the framing options desired.  We will notify the customer once the artwork has been framed and is ready to be shipped.  Framed artwork is usually ready to be shipped within two weeks after payment has been received and processed.

Once the Artwork has been shipped, the customer will be provided with a tracking number in order to track their shipment.  All Originals are fully insured by Caledonia Studio Artis, Ltd. during transit.

RETURN POLICY

It is the customer's responsibility to inspect any artwork upon arrival for any damage.  If any of the artwork is damaged, the customer must notify Caledonia Studio Artis, Ltd. within 24 hours of receiving their shipment.  Any damage reported after 24 hours will be the sole responsibility of the customer, and neither Scott Spencer, nor Caledonia Studio Artis, Ltd. will be liable for the damages.

Contact us within 24 hours if there is damaged or missing artwork upon delivery of your order.

Caledonia Studio Artis, Ltd. will be responsible for the return shipment of any damaged art work, and the work will be replaced at no additional cost to the collector.

"LOST WORKS"

Our site showcases only a few of the pieces that Scott has done over the years.  Many of Scott's pieces were either sold or given away without photographs having ever been taken of the work.  Through the years the contact information for the owner's of these pieces has been lost or misplaced, and we have no idea how to get in contact with them.  We affectionately call these pieces, "The Lost Works".

If you are in possession of one of Scott's works of art that is not showcased on this site, please contact us.  We would love to hear from you!  If the piece you own is one that we would like to showcase on our site, we would be willing to offer you a 10% discount on your next order, in exchange for a high resolution, digital photograph of the work.
